Reem Acra Resort 2013 Has Healing Powers

10

I have a cold. Strike that, I have a marching band playing 76 Trombones in my head, while being sucked down a pool drain.  Summer colds are the worst.  What can make me feel better?

And the piece de resistance…

Favorite NYFW Fall 2012 Looks, So Far

0

Having a full-time job always gets in the way of Fashion Week.  It’s too bad.  Thank goodness for Style.com, Fashionologie and Pinterest.

Diane von Furstenberg

Red is big this year. This neckline makes it extra special, though.

Zac Posen

This dress is the perfect mix of Asian simplicity and 1940s pin-up girl.

Edun

The blouse looks like a torrent of fabric, but I love it.

Lela Rose

I’m a big fan of overlays. Big. Huge.

Derek Lam

Not sure what I covet more, the dress or the Bardot-esque hair.  Who am I kidding? The hair.

Diane von Furstenberg

I’ve never been so jealous of a model in my life.  This outfits is perfection. Sultry, sculpted perfection.

Fashion Week Highlights: Dewy Drama at Tahari

0

Working in a professional environment doesn’t give you a lot of leeway to experiment with your makeup.  The best looks for work are natural, fresh and understated.  Thus, you don’t usually find a lot of inspiration on the catwalk where the makeup can be a little…uh, drastic.  But this year, Elie Tahari partnered with Bobbi Brown to create a soft, flushed look for the runway.

I love the slightly flushed cheek with the dewy highlights.  This look is natural with just a little bit of drama.  Want to steal this look?  Just follow Bobbi Brown’s face chart.

On the cheeks, you have the pink rose blush ($22).  The eyes get a hint of shimmer from Bobbi’s limited edition gold chrome eyeshadow ($23).  For the eyeliner, Bobbi eschews black liner in favor of indigo nights and bash eyeshadow shades, a deep blue and rich green ($20 each).  Lastly, they added an iced lilac glitter gloss ($20) to the lips to give just a hint of color.

Fashion Week Highlights: Daniel Vosovic

0

In 2006, Daniel Vosovic burst onto the fashion scene with a runner-up finish on Bravo’s Project Runway. His freshman collection included my favorite piece produced by any Project Runway participant, a gorgeous ivory military coat with a sculpted collar. Recently, he returned to the runway with a win on the Project Runway All-Star Challenge and a presentation of his Fall 2010 collection.

I hate winter, but I love winter outerwear.  It’s a conundrum from which I shall never recover.  This coat has an incredible draped collar and a lovely embroidered detail on the torso.  And even though I’m not sure how to feel about it, it’s interesting how Vosovic cut the bottom of the coat in a shirt-tail shape instead of straight across.

Because I work on Capitol Hill, I’m always looking for new and interesting suit shapes and styles.  This suit has a beautiful drape to the jacket and a belted waist with a slight peplum.  I also love that the cuffs of the sleeve pull away slightly from the wrist instead of fitting like cloth handcuffs.  But while I love the jacket, I’m not crazy about the pants.  Pleated wide legs would just accentuate my saddle bags–and no one wants that.

I love the soft, mauvey color of this dress.  I think the pattern is water marks instead of a structured print.  After a decade of empire waisted dresses, it’s nice to see a drop waist for a change.  I also love the pleating and draping on the sleeves.  This is a really fresh way to wear a one shoulder that is a bit sexy but also ladylike.

I love this suit.  I would buy it right now and probably wear it way too much.  The jacket has a banded collar, a strong shoulder and interesting details.  The skirt has a layered design and fabulous slit.  And to those of you who think that that slit isn’t appropriate for work, I say p-shaw.  I’m not afraid to show a little leg within reason, and the rest of the suit is so demure that a little thigh isn’t going to kill anyone.

I love this dress.  I’m not sure why.  Perhaps it’s because only a small chested girl, like myself, could pull it off.

Fashion Week Highlights: Rebecca Taylor

0

One of my favorite designers is the flirty, feminine and fabulous Rebecca Taylor.  Taylor is one of only a handful of designers whose runway collections translate to Washington, D.C.  The two Rebecca Taylor combo dresses and the tweed jacket that I own are some of my favorite pieces.  This year, Taylor amped up the cosmopolitan rocker chic but still kept the look feminine and pretty.  Here are my five favorite looks from her Fall 2010 show.

I hope that those of you who invested in over-the-knee boots took good care of them because they were all over the runways, and the Rebecca Taylor show was no exception.  As for this look, I’m a sucker for a ladylike cape.  Frankly, a cape is magic.  You can put a camel cape over your pajamas and make them look elegant.

The architecture of this dress is really stunning.  I love the strong shoulder and the seamed shaping.  The dress is a bit futuristic and space age, but the color is such a soft robin’s egg blue that it’s still girly.

There was a lot of layering happening at this show.  In this look we have a silk, draw waist dress with a lacy, ruffled cardigan topped with a plum colored short jacket.  Personally, I love the ruffly cardigan.  I’m going to start saving now for when that comes on the market in September.

Let’s break this down.  Here we have a grey satin skirt with sequin fringe paired with a delicate dove grey blouse all worn under a chunky, heather knit.  This look is the perfect way to bring your evening look into the daytime.  Also, I love the monochromatic tones in this look, greys and greyish blues.  Keeping everything in one color palette really lets the textures and sparkle shine through.

Hear me on this: If you want to learn how to layer, flip through the slides from this show.  The way these clothes were layered was so creative and chic, it’s really more of a layering tutorial than fashion show.  Here we have another gorgeous robin’s egg blue piece paired with a sheer knit and what appears to be a leather mini-skirt.  Both ruffled and architectural, this jacket is just epic.  Yet another piece that I need to start saving up to own.

If you would like to see the rest of the Rebecca Taylor collection, visit Style.com.  The only thing that I didn’t like was the bowler hats, perhaps this is because I grew up in the era of Blossom and I cannot stand Diane Keaton.  But how can you not love a woman who embraces sequins for daytime?
